The Hills come alive with the Sound of Music in Pretoria.

Let's start at the very beginning - a very good place to start. Visualise people bursting into song every few minutes whilst reading this article. Believe us… it’s more fun this way. - You are welcomed with a scene set in the Austrian Alps. There is a woman happily twirling and singing. It’s Mary Poppins… Oops, our mistake. It is not the sequel to the Mary Poppins stage production. These hills are alive with The Sound of Music. The twirling and singing woman is Maria, a young woman completing her training to become a nun in an abbey in Salzburg. The grand finale of collaborations between Richard Rodgers & Oscar Hammerstein II, The Sound of Music, has become a play beloved around the world and last performed by Die Hoërskool Oos-Moot, located in the Moot-area of Pretoria, in 2001. - Nineteen years later, the school proudly presents The Sound of Music as its annual 2020 musical production. The show will be running from the 28th to the 31st of July 2020 in the prestigious Aula theatre at The University of Pretoria. - Based on the true story of the Von Trapp Family Singers, this play captures a personal tale of growth and hope amidst the horrors of World War II. The production is directed by Christa-Louiè Kannemeyer of ClassAct, Showbiz for Schools, to ensure that the show meets the quality of similar professionally produced and performed musicals. The show is presented in arrangement with Dalro Proprietary Limited. - The culture committee of the school, in conjunction with the main event sponsor, The Consulting Services Hub, are involved in many marketing projects of which the most exciting is the creating of a persona specifically for this event namely Sister Mary Moot. You are welcome to follow her on Facebook or Instagram. - The hand-picked company of this production, which includes a compliment of about 80 school learners from the school, will entertain audiences whilst telling the tale of young postulant Maria Rainer (Gera-Mari Kolbé), whose free spirit has trouble fitting into the rules and regulations of Nonnberg Abbey. - Commissioned by the Mother Abbess to serve as the governess for seven motherless children, Maria transforms the Von Trapp family home from a place of strict rules and regulations to one filled with joy, with laughter, and with music. - In the process, Maria wins the hearts of all seven children and their widower father, Captain Von Trapp (Heinrich Botha). With the Mother Abbess’ blessing, and to the children’s delight, Maria follows her heart, and Maria and the Captain exchange vows. Upon returning home from their honeymoon, Maria and the Captain learn that their beloved Austria has been taken over by the Nazi’s, and the retired Captain is asked to report for immediate service in a Nazi ruled Navy. - When the Nazis show up at the Von Trapp’s to take the Captain away for duty, it is a family singing performance… ironic don’t you think… that buys the family time to make their narrow escape with help from a close family friend and the abbey. Their Austrian convictions constrain Maria, the Captain, and the children to flee over the mountains of Switzerland to safety climbing every mountain until they find their dreams.
